I recently met with small and medium-sized business owners interested in learning more about how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can optimize their operations. Like most businesses, they struggle with production equipment uptime, supply chain management, sales and marketing, and their business’s distribution and logistical aspects.

  • Network Design & Planning AI can analyze historical movements across a network and create optimal designs to cover the demand allocations experienced. Flexible AI modelling allows multiple “what-if” scenarios to be considered, ensuring agility in the network is developed that can mitigate against risk and offer higher levels of resilience.
  • Inventory Management: Software leveraging AI can optimize inventory levels across multiple locations in a network by predicting which products will be in demand and when, reducing carrying costs and improving both Customer Service and cash flow.
  • Supplier Management: AI can assess supplier performance and recommend the best suppliers based on end-to-end cost, reliability, quality and delivery times.

3. Sales and Marketing: This area has been an early adopter of AI solutions providing AI-driven marketing automation, lead scoring, and customer insights to improve sales and marketing efforts. In addition, SMB businesses can take advantage of AI solutions that offer predictive analytics, customer insights, and personalized marketing tools. Here are the areas AI can have a big impact:

  • Sales Forecasting: AI can analyze historical sales data, additional causal factors that impact demand, and holistic market trends to predict future demand more accurately, helping to optimize inventory levels and reduce overstocking or stockouts. Improved accuracy leads to improve Supply Chain Planning, allowing Manufacturing and Distribution optimization.
